CMF(Color, Material, Finish) NEWSLETTER. 2023.06-1

We use the word ‘vintage’ to refer to the places or products whose beauty lasts even after decades. It was originally used to denote a high-end wine that’s been produced with the grapes harvested in the years of large grape yield, but its usage gradually expanded into various fields including fashion to now refer to the products that are old and rare. To name a few, they include old types of furniture, cars, stereo systems, buildings, and so on. Moreover, vintage-style interior designs and products have become trendy for their classic vibe with aged, faded colors.

Buildings with Old Memories

Brooklyn, New York is not as historic and antique as the other cities in Europe but was reborn in the hands of artists as a city with chic buildings. The brick-and-mortar buildings have become old and dirty with age, but the artists breathed life into those buildings by emphasizing their unique vibe and transforming them into new works of art. As a result, Brooklyn was reborn as a city with vintage charm.

At the pinnacle of the vintage stand the ruins of ancient Greece and Rome. We cannot help but stand in awe of the CMF technology and skills of these ancient civilizations thousands of years ago that manufactured and processed concrete by combining volcanic ash and lime, natural stones, and bricks.

We can find just as many hints of various CMF inspirations from the centuries-old antique city of Europe as you would do from the beautiful architecture of ancient Greece and Rome. Get your inspiration from historic buildings in the world of architecture such as Rome’s Leaning Tower of Pisa, Saint Peter’s Basilica, and Cologne Cathedral.

Let’s have a look at several cases of how we’re utilizing vintage buildings these days. In Seongsu-dong, also known as the Brooklyn of the Republic of Korea, the buildings that were formerly used as factories or storage are now transformed into coffee shops or culture·arts centers with a vintage vibe.

Various CMF elements such as dirt, rock, tree, brick, steel frame, etc. are refined to come together in harmony, and this image comes as a new experience for us. Rusty steel plate, cracked marble, natural stone painted over with concrete, creaky old plywood, bricks in faded red color, and so on. For some, these vintage look-and-feel elements present themselves as a new value, whereas for others, they bring back nostalgia that evokes warmth.

The Classic House Finished with Natural Materials

A vintage vibe is trendy also in interior designs for homes and living spaces. Because it is difficult to finish the residential space with rough concrete or natural stone, we generally use materials such as paper, trees, tiles, and paint to create a cozy and comfortable atmosphere.

Finish your vintage interior design by finding the right combination of the Pantone color and floorings or types of furniture with marked knots, worn-down tiles with rough texture, faded red bricks, and green fabric couches.
