Iconic structures around the world such as the Eiffel Tower, Burj Khalifa, Taipei 101, Opera House, Marina Sands Bay, Petronas, and St Mary Axe, are celebrated as beautiful buildings that symbolize cities and countries. They also stimulate the interest of artsumers by evoking art. Antoni Gaudi designed buildings with a unique sense of form from an aesthetic perspective, and left magnificent structures such as the Sagrada Familia.

Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) in South Korea, completed by Zaha Hadid in 2014, is the world’s largest asymmetrical building. Its massive exterior, made of 45,133 aluminum panels, and the interior space of white CMF resemble a spaceship from a science fiction movie. Inside and outside this structure, visitors can experience a colossal work of art, with unfamiliar form elements, achromatic colors, and reflections and refractions of light produced by metallic materials.

Ando Tadao, known for works such as Chapel on the Water, Church of the Light, and Temple of Water, incorporates natural elements such as light and water in his architecture using exposed concrete CMF technology. His recent work, South Korea’s LG Art Center, captures attention by embodying his architectural philosophy. He has designed communal spaces such as lobbies, corridors, and staircases with geometric features, and each one has a unique character to provide “provocative arenas for dialogue.”

ATAH Studio in Shanghai was responsible for the entire design of the China Textile Center (CTC) commercial complex, which has an Art Center at the entrance and is wrapped in a curtain wall of triangular double-glazed panels. This surface integrates projection technology to transform the building with various patterns and animations. Architectural marvels such as these offer functional value and the pleasure of experiencing art, a key aim of modern architecture.

Art Entering Everyday Life

In the field of interior and living, efforts were made to bridge art and daily life through collaborations with artists capable of captivating artsumers. Home furnishing brand Casamia opened a branch in Seorae Village in Seoul last year, renovated as an art salon. British contemporary artist Richard Woods, known for his bold and sensory artworks and patterns, transformed the exterior and interior design into art spaces. His signature piece Holiday Home was featured on the exterior, and collaborative furniture and accessories were exhibited inside alongside his works. Graphics expressed in vivid colors and bold lines were applied to various materials such as wood, steel, glass, acrylic, and fabric, to breathe life into everyday spaces with CMF designs.

The total interior company Hyundai Livart launched the project Furniture in Motion last year in collaboration with British media artist group Universal Everything, using a lenticular lens technique that causes an optical illusion depending on the viewing angle to make the media art appear to move.

In 2021, they developed the Livart Color Palette, a color manual comprising 126 shades inspired by the deep sea, in partnership with British architecture and interior design studio Aive Rogers Design.

This collaboration led to the Inner Lives Collection featuring design furniture with delightful surprises in contrast to its calm exterior. This shows the importance of form (style) and the CMF effect.

The Linear furniture series, born from a collaboration with Finnish master cabinet maker and designer Antrei Hartikainen, is also reminiscent of an art piece. It uses sophisticated woodworking techniques to blend birch wood to fulfill both functional and aesthetic roles.

Mobility

The world-renowned fashion designer Virgil Abloh has thrilled the world with his numerous collaborations with various brands. In 2021, he unveiled his second collaboration, Project Maybach, with Gordon Wagener, the chief design officer of Mercedes-Benz. Inspired by nature, this project is a two-seater electric off-road coupe that symbolizes a traditional urban brand in an off-road setting. This collaboration not only presents the potential of future design by involving a fashion designer in automobile design, but also shows a new perspective where cars are perceived as art pieces in line with the artsumer trend. It signifies a fresh interpretation of luxury, extends the boundaries of function and design, and suggests innovative CMF approaches. The G-Class 40th Anniversary Geländewagen, another collaborative model between Abloh and Mercedes-Benz, is also recognized as a noteworthy case from the perspective of artsumers.
