Column-Free Doughnut-Shaped Architecture?

ⓒDubai-Future-Foundation

Typically, buildings utilizing Hi-Tech technology incorporate various materials such as steel, aluminum, glass, and concrete, engineered into various tension structures and trusses according to engineering principles, resulting in unique appearances. Dubai boasts numerous astounding Hi-Tech architectural marvels like the Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest building, and the sail-shaped 7-star hotel, the Burj Al Arab. Among these, let's introduce the 'Museum Of The Future' in Dubai, completed in 2022.

Operated by the Dubai Future Foundation, this museum is so unique and captivating that it's dubbed as the 'most beautiful building in the world'. It's hard to believe it's a building at all, with its column-free doughnut-shaped design. Designed by architect Shaun Killa of Killa Design, this structure realized a 77m high doughnut-shaped form using parametric design and Building Information Modeling (BIM) based on 3D modeling technology.

The facade covering an area of 17,600m² features 1024 composite material panels assembled through a 16-step process. Moreover, the eye-catching intricate Arabesque patterns represent a quote from Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE: "We may not live for hundreds of years, but the products of our creativity will remain as a lasting legacy after we're gone. The future is the domain of those who imagine, design, and implement. The future is not the object of waiting, but the object of creation. Innovation is not a luxury, it's the key to the revival of nations and peoples."

Inside the Museum of the Future, except for vertical elevators, there are no columns supporting the ceiling. Arabic calligraphy adorns the interiors, and daylight effects are prominent. The museum features an experiential exhibition called 'Journey of the Pioneers', allowing exploration of future worlds, covering topics from space station living to ecosystem restoration efforts and technological advancements contributing to human well-being. These three areas are designed to offer experiences and narratives valid from the present into the future.

A Coffee Break in Hi-Tech Spaces

In the field of interior living, the introduction of Hi-Tech CMF concepts provides new sensibilities and values. Typically, when we mention Hi-Tech, 'metal' or 'silver' related CMF comes to mind. Let's see how various materials harmonize to create new sensibilities.

The MO bakery coffee bar in Saudi Arabia has received praise for moving beyond traditional café interiors with its CMF. Designed by the renowned Spanish agency Masquespacio, known for its iconic and whimsical interior designs, this space breaks away from conventional design.

No colors other than those in the gray spectrum are used throughout the space. Furthermore, the design revolves around the powerful element of 'water', a key ingredient in coffee and bakery items. Structures installed on the walls of the bar represent flowing water, while lighting fixtures depict solid and gaseous forms of water.

Unique-shaped furniture finished in silver colors, specially crafted for this space, combined with adjustable lighting, allows for a variety of atmospheres. This space, harmonizing various materials such as metal, tiles, and glass, and implementing monochromatic finishes, embodies the CMF of Hi-Tech sensibility, providing a unique and surreal experience, thus presenting distinct brand value. The showcased design cases predominantly utilize white and chrome finishes, with asymmetrical forms dominating the scene.

LED bulb series 'uri' by Hong Kong lighting startup NAP is inspired by the grandeur of space and the beauty of planets. The flow of light from transparent acrylic spheres offers excellent inspiration for Hi-Tech design. Additionally, the contrast between transparent luminous parts and the glossy black body effectively embodies the inspiration of Hi-Tech.
