Optical patterns in which geometric patterns or lines are rhythmically repeated catch our eyes immediately. If you keep staring at them, they are also delightful because they vividly move as if you were being sucked into them. The June edition of our newsletter covers optical patterns that bring wit and liveliness to your work. Gain amazing insights and creative ideas through CMF cases prepared by the hïda team.

Cruz-Diez, artist of color and light

Carlos Cruz-Diez, one of the most prominent thinkers in the field of colors in the 20th century, was born in Venezuela and continued to create op-kinetic artworks while based in Paris, France. Op-kinetic art refers to works that create optical illusions via visual art in which lines and shapes move following the audience's movement and gaze. His works are eye-catching in terms of trying to share their beauty with the audience not through their shapes or stories, but only through their colors. Let's appreciate the world-renowned master's works that have maximized the artistic experience of color and light by combining art and science.

Going beyond the limits of traditional designs

Jiani Zeng and Honghao Deng, a designer duo from the MIT Media Lab in the US, have developed 'Illusory Material' that is a new 3D printing method. They intended to make products that can interact with users based on lenticular printing that enables the creation of three-dimensional effects depending on the viewer's angle. There are various cases of its application, including lights featuring dynamic colors, perfume bottles showing their contents from specific angles, and lollipops Using this method, wouldn't it be possible in the near future to push the envelope of traditional designs and create products with dreamy materials that only exist in the digital world?

Fashion items with optical illusion-based moiré patterns

'United Nude', a shoe brand with a unique and free-spirited vibe, has introduced high heels inspired by graphic optical art. Their designs feature the patterns that express constant movements extending from the heel to the upper. Vans, a sports lifestyle brand, has launched sneakers with a design that blends digital printing with 3D printing technology. A subtle sense of dimension was created by adding black lines over the yellow, blue, and magenta colors. This is likely to add a fun element to the monotonous looks of both high heels and sneakers.

This month's CMF recommended by hïda

hïda has created a Moire pattern by intercrossing at least two line-based patterns through 3D printing. This can create an optical illusion as if the pattern were moving according to the angle of reflection and present a colorful and three-dimensional design by applying a broader range of colors.
